As temperatures drop, a sweater is the perfect piece to top off an outfit.
With so many styles, fabrics and colors to choose from this season, we look forward to the chill in the air.
"Sweaters have such an appeal because they feel great, create the idea of cocooning, and are so soft and comfortable," says Gregg Andrews, one of the fashion directors for Nordstrom Department Stores. "Wearing something like that makes us feel warm and cozy and is so important in today's world, where everything is so high- tech."
In addition to providing cool-weather protection, sweaters add another dimension to a wardrobe.
They are replacing the blazer, Andrews says. A sweater, especially a longer one, can be worn as a layering piece, dressed up or dressed down, and creates a different look when worn with a belt, over a dress or paired with skinny jeans.
"The sweaters for fall are amazing," says Laird Borrelli- Persson, senior features editor for Style.com. "You can get cashmere, and they come in such great fall jewel tones and in so many different styles. The cardigan sweater can be worn open, or with a belt like a coat, or as a layering piece."
The sweater trend extends into vests, dresses and leggings, says Heather Hannan, public-relations manager for Macy's Central.
"I am seeing a lot of cardigans and sweaters in cashmere and merino wool," she says. "They are such a great layering option. Sweaters are so important now, as it is getting colder outside and you want to be warm but also fashionable. They are a great transition when you need something for the cooler weather but don't yet need a heavy coat."
Hot colors include purples, oranges and deep blues.
Saks Fifth Avenue, Downtown, is featuring a cranberry belted sweater coat by Theory.
"This is a sweater for all seasons, complete with novelty stitches like cables and ribs," says Karen Peter, general manager for Saks. "Remember to belt it to emphasize the waist."
Sweaters are being shown with tulip sleeves, cowl necks, lace and bows, but don't forget the traditional turtleneck, which never goes out of style, Hannan says. …
